What To Look For In A Great Piano Teacher
Do you want to learn how to play the piano? You might already have a piano at home, and have been playing for some time, but if it’s time for you to level up your skills, then a teacher can be an effective solution.
Once you’ve decided to look for a teacher, you will want to find someone who can help improve your skills and keep you motivated and happy about your pursuit. This is why we’ve made this list of things you should try to find when shopping for a new piano teacher.
Your teacher should be better than you
It’s not an ironclad rule, but rather a decent rule of thumb. If you want to improve, you will increase your chances by enlisting the help of someone who knows what you don’t.
Someone who already has mastered what you are attempting, can help further improve your strong areas, and offer constructive tips on how to strengthen your weaker ones.
Understanding of your level
Not only is it great if your teacher is a certain level above your own skills, at least in the area in which you’d like to improve, but if your teacher also understands how to tailor the tutoring for you and your needs, all the better.
You can ask your potential teacher for a few lessons, and then get a feel for how they’d be sharing their knowledge and teaching you in the future. We recommend trying 4-12 sessions,
since a single session rarely is enough to judge how well teacher and student matches.
